Delivering Happiness

I have just picked up a new book called Delivering Happiness and I always read who the book is dedicated to, and it’s interesting to see that it says “This book is dedicated to Ava Zech and all of the other aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders of tomorrow. Happy eleventh birthday, Ava!” It’s a business book about Zappos, one of the most popular eCommerce site in the States. Who could Ava be and it does not sound like the author’s wife or family at all!? And I googled it and found out that Ava is an 11 year old 16th grade school kid who developed an idea for an organic dog tattoo product after noticing her English Labrador, Tank, was losing the black on the tip of his nose. Her dad did some research, and the duo began testing products on their dog. Zech’s advice to fellow entrepreneurs: “Really keep going at what you believe in and it can become possible. Start small and go big.” It’s amazing how this young girl came about into inspiring some other adults and even to the extent of moving a US$1 billion business. Children has always been one of the most admired people in our Bible, why? Because they are pure and simple at hearts. I am not good at dealing with children at all, and I am going to a mission trip working with small kids and that worry me a bit, coz most of the time, I feel that they drive me crazy. But God has something special for each one of us, the more you fear something, the more you would see that happening because He wants you to overcome those – I hope I would be fine with the kids in the coming trip!
Daily Quote
Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven
Matthew 18:3-4
I pray to God that I don’t worry but receive His blessings and grace and spread those to the needy ones.

cause to draw

Over the Easter break long weekend, I suddenly got inspired to draw further, I dug out all my painting tools, colors and paper and started to draw. Deep down I have always like Pattern Design, something I could not pursue during my college years and suddenly there is this thrust of interest back in my heart again (hope it’s not short-lived). I hope I could combine my design together with the daily quote and publish a book 2 as the sequel to the edition 1. I don’t know if I could make it in time in 2012, but something I saw tells me as long as I believe, I could do it. 3hundredand65 is a blog site which features a graphic novel for 2012′s 365 days – with the aim of helping the Teenage Cancer Trust. Each day a writer and artist will feature their work, and in the year end – the total work will be printed! I find this plot amazing and creative – for such a good cause, God has shown to us that there are many gifted and generous souls. Keep a hopeful and thankful heart.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

1 Corinthians 12:4

I pray to God that He will keep my curious heart burning with the desire to serve him and use my gifts abundantly.

Remember He is the artist and you are only the picture. You can’t see it. So quietly submitted to be painted. Keep fulfilling all the obvious duties of your station (you really know quite well enough what they are!) asking forgiveness for each failure and then leaving it alone.
You are in the right way. Walk – don’t keep on looking at it.

where’s the fish?

Besides listening to podcast every morning, I also listen to gospel radio and there is this phone-in radio program called Pastors Perspective which 2 pastors are on air taking people’s phone call who ask them all kinds of questions. It’s just soooo interesting – people just ask all kinds of questions and I am surprised by how quick both pastors reply with scriptures references and they also remarked which are their own interpretations of God’s words, and they supported with other history references. One interesting question raised today was done by a 5 year old girl, she asked: why God did not get the fish into Noah’s Ark? It’s super funny of the question as I never thought of it, and never even ask why about this important historic event, and children just ask things that seem obvious but actually quite legitimate. The pastor’s answer is funny too, but I think it’s right also. He said coz the fishes could survive the flood as they can swim! LOL! I actually think it’s so good that we can learn from the children and if we could keep a curious and pure heart like those of the children, that would be obedience to God’s commands. Let me listen on and share more interesting Q&A with you all.

spring visit

I was planning for a short trip at the end of April and have been thinking of going to Tokyo or Seoul for a while, just that to check things out such as design, shopping, or some place to chill a bit. In fact, I have also booked the hotel and just checking out airfares etc. But last week my church was announcing the group travel to the Philippines with International Care Ministry ICM, visiting the poor ones and over the other side of the world, I thought, hmm…maybe this is something I could consider…and the thought left aside as I was swarmed with work. But yesterday, staff from the ICM came again and played a short video of what they do, and started to recruit for people to join and explained what they would do: they would help build homes, play and create with pre-school children, visit the women who are supporting their families through the Red Rope handicraft initiative, help feed malnourished children, worship in a local church and much more. And the trip dates fall exactly on the same day as my trip to Japan, same duration! Then I know God has a hint for me which are quite obvious! And I went signed up and will pray to God hoping he wold fill the quota so we could all go! I used to have a thought of visiting a poor country at least once a year, I hope this thought could be carried on!

three donkeys

My church had a Christmas celebration already yesterday! It’s the Creative Christmas series where the children’s ministry brought us The Three Donkeys, an original work by Nury Vittachi. At first I hesitated in the morning if I should go, coz I really don’t fancy children’s play too much, I can’t handle kids too well. But I told myself, God has given us the chance, just go and take a look and if I really don’t like it, then just go. Then at the service, I was in fact enjoying the play, the music, the passion all these kids brought us, there were lots of them, nearly 50 of them? And the tiniest one is almost just two year old and he was a lamb, a white furry lamb! The experience is exceptional and I can feel the love these little ones have devoted to our almighty God. Our children proclaim Christ in a way that only they can, and I hope all of you guys who have children, bring them to Sunday school and groom them in the way God desires. You will see the amazing wonder you never expect.

But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

education

Many of my friends are parents now, one best friend Whatsapp me an image of what she encountered when she was applying a kindergarten application form which says “To be considered in the admission process, all parents are required 1) an artistic work e.g. painting and sculpture AND 2) a 2 minute video clip of a parent-child activity.” My friend is not even amused when she sees such requirement which I am sure she could easily fulfills. But I am sure she and myself find these schools are overdoing it, what do they want? Can we give them a bowl of water and then tell them it is contemporary art and would they agree? Who are the school think they are to judge the children by critiquing the ‘art’ of the parents? Imagine all the parents ‘rehearsing’ the video clips or ‘editing’ the clips to make it an impeccable piece, what does that mean? Education has become such a rarity in a such a rich and resourceful city – HK! But we are not getting the relevant care and nurture our children deserve. Imagine if Jesus teaches like the schools we have right now, do you think we would have such a huge population of Christians nowadays? If Jesus only teaches the best of the crowd, who takes care of the weak and the minority?

Daily Quote
I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge
1 Corinthians 1:4-5

I pray to God that HK schools and educational system would be inspired by Jesus one day and give to all equally.

a friend who glows

I just met a friend who has spent the past year volunteering as teacher in China, Yunnan. He showed us a video clip which he was being interviewed and shot his daily routine with the kids he lived with so far. It’s amazing what I saw he did, he has to give up so much he always have in Hong Kong and what is more is for the upcoming year, he is shifting to another part of China (I forgot where! haha) where he would be taking care of sick people suffering from AIDS and leprosy. He told me he is afraid of blood and he is not sure if he can handle the process of cleaning the wounds of those patients, but he is not fearful at all. It’s not even a documentary film I am watching, but learning directly from a friend the feeling is strange. How come so many people could do so much and there are people who cannot give further? Even myself are not doing completely well and what my persistent and daring friend does made me look at him in complete awe. He is like a glowing object when he left my vision. He has everything coz he has God in His heart.

Daily Quote
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

1 John 4:16

I pray that all volunteers will be blessed with love and grace of God’s Holy Spirit!

too much love will kill you

I learned from a TV program that there are over 1 million children left unwanted in China right now. It’s absolutely stunning consider so many people out there want to have their own kids but so many innocent souls are abandoned. These poor kids have been victims of poverty in China and their parents could not afford to raise them or themselves thus selling them, leaving them in the street or being kidnapped by bad guys and beat them up to make them beg for money, when they become a burden and not functioning they are left in the street. There are simply too many people in China, and lives have not been respected or valued. Kids under the camera all have the biggest smiles and those interviewed said they just want to read books and I saw that they could make their own bed super neatly like those you see in the hotel with their small hands and I reckon they probably are just 4 year old!? So many children in HK are severely spoiled. It says in a song “too much love will kill you” and this seems to be so contradicting to God’s lessons? I think too much love without brains will kill you…not the love i suppose.

Daily Quote
I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.

Daniel 5:14

I pray to God that He gives us the sense to know how to love, to love with sensibility and senses.

feed the small ones with pastures

The HK Book Fair is opening again this week! Street or pop culture dominates the fair as those afterall are the cash cows for publishers and authors. Massive number of photo books are selling and most of them feature more than sexy or almost naked young models – it’s kinda sad that HK youngsters are facing heaps of temptations crumpling their morals and values. The kids are soo young and oftentimes they could not differentiate between the right and the wrong. They just feed on what the media provides. Seems like media worldwide does not take on a conscientious role at all, such as Murdoch’s phone-hacking scandal. If our children is not nurtured with the correct values and ethics, we are liking killing our own future, if the Bible is being read and interpreted more widely, maybe the phenomenon would be much different now.

Daily Quote
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.
Deuteronomy 4:9

I pray to God that we the society could take reference to His teachings more and more.

Father Joe

My boss just redesigned her own website and was playing around with it yesterday! It’s actually just a simple aggregate page which pulls all her works and words together such as company site, facebook page, tumblr threads and personal design works of course. The more I look at it and looking at my own blog-site, it’s interesting to how we could have used our time in ‘making’ things. Everything starts small, and slowly building up with the grace of God, just like Mercy Center in Thailand founded by an American Father who is now almost 70 years old but spending most of his life in Bangkok helping and saving poor children’s lives. His organization is called Mercy Center and now hires over 300 staff. Click here to visit site. 2 Australian film-makers spent 4 months documenting what Father Joe does in a movie called Father Joe and the Bangkok Slaughterhouse. Visit here to know more! Thank God there are sincere creative souls doing things to let us know how blessed our lives are!

Daily Quote
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1 John 3:18

I pray to God that may His love spread through the sincere people and servants of His to raise the hands of the needy ones to praise Him aloud.
